Rhythmic Movement Training

What is it?

Rhythmic Movement Training is a movement-based, primitive (infant or neo-natal) reflex integration program that uses developmental movements, gentle isometric pressure and self-awareness to rebuild the foundations necessary to help overcome learning, sensory, emotional and behavioural challenges for children and adults.

What are Rhythmic Movements?

Rhythmic movements are gentle rocking and reflex integration movements that stimulate neural pathways and promote learning, emotional balance and ease of movement. RMTi is an effective way to help with symptoms of ADD/ADHD, learning challenges, autism and behavioral/emotional imbalances without the use of drugs.

Suzanne is an RMTi Consultant and is currently (2022) in the final stages of becoming licensed to teach Levels 1, 2 and Making Connections.

RMTi One – Focus, Organisation & Comprehension – 2 days

In this 2-day course participants learn the basics of the Rhythmic Movement Training: how rhythmic movements can be used to assist in regulating muscle tone; stimulating the connections between the cerebellum and the neocortex, especially the frontal lobes in order to improve attention and control impulses. The course also includes examining the role of the primitive reflexes in development, and how to integrate them using rhythmic movements and isometric pressure.

Ideal for OTs, OTAs, PTs, PTAs, SLPs, parents, social workers, family and mental health therapists, developmental optometrists and VTs, yoga therapists, classroom teachers; special education teachers; nursury and preschool teachers, health care providers; massage therapists, trauma specialists and caregivers; kinesiologists, Brain Gym instructors.

Topics Include:

  • Demonstrate and practice of rhythmic movements and how these movements promote brain development, effective learning, speech development, emotional balance, stress release, stamina and postural strength.
  • Discussion, demonstration and practice of reflexes related to developing postural control.
  • Discussions and practice of how reflexes and their importance to understanding the foundations of sensory-motor, emotional and cognitive function.
  • Experience, notice and express ‘before and after’ changes that occur from doing 17 Rhythmic Movements

RMTi Two – Emotions, Memory & Behaviour – 1 day

This 1-day course addresses how the Rhythmic Movement Training affects our emotions, how to work with movements to get in touch with our emotions and to stabilise them when they threaten to take control. It also examines how stress and daily life affects our body and how the rhythmic movements can help to relax and ease muscle tension. It is a necessary supplement for anyone who wishes to work with rhythmic movement training.

Topics Include:

  • The role infant movement and reflexes play in brain growth, learning, emotional development and behaviour, and the research showing the crucial importance of integrating infant reflexes for foundational sensory processing and learning skills.
  • Why unintegrated reflexes are a major factor in challenges such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, developmental delay, sensory processing disorder, autism, chronic stress/overwhelm and other learning, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
  • The critical importance of integrating the Fear Paralysis and Moro reflexes for sensory processing, emotional regulation and social development.
  • How to use Rhythmic Movements with people of all ages
  • Identify how an individual’s behaviour indicates an underdeveloped limbic system
  • Identify protocols to release tension patterns from areas affected by the Tendon Guard Reflex—legs, hip, back, neck and shoulders.

RMTi Making Connections – 2 days

The aim of RMTi Making Connections course is to investigate how movement, both before and after birth, is important for laying the foundations of neural development and organizations, and how we can use movement that replicate these innate movements to assist in developing brain maturity.

In this 2-day course participants learn the basics of RMTi and the Rhythmic Movements and how it relates to building neurology and building neural maturity. It is important to stimulate the connections between all areas of the brain in order to functions efficiently, and to form the basis of becoming a competent and curious learner. This course looks at how the brain develops from the bottom up and develops these connections between the hindbrain, midbrain and forebrain so that eventually the prefrontal cortex is able to establish the ability to coordinate actions, feeling and thoughts.

This course is ideal for anyone interested in learning and development. There is no prerequisite.

Topics Include:

  • Passive, active and Sitting/kneeling movements Rhythmic Movements and how to find rhythm and exactness of coordination
  • Neural development and brain structure
  • Stressors that effect neural development
  • The effects of Rhythmic Movements on the brain
  • Procedures for Brainstem and Reticular Activating System (RAS) and thalamus to relay information efficiently to the cortex
  • Procedures for the cerebellum to promote coordination
  • Midbrain procedures for processing auditory and visual information
  • Procedures for the basal ganglia and developing the ability to be still
  • Limbic system procedures for self-regulation and episodic memory
  • Prefrontal procedures for connections to areas important for focus, attention, comprehension, movements, coordination and memories
